Since 2009 when it was released, Google Voice has made a splash in the Internet phone market. Having 1.5 million users, many of whom use the service everyday, this service provides a variety of sophisticated features, including international calling, free outbound land-line calls and video calling.

One of the service's most interesting features is that it assigns users a phone number, that when called, will ring at any or all of that person's phones. Moreover, with a little configuration, you can send faxes for virtually no cost to anywhere in the world.

How Google Voice Fax Works Google Voice fax is not technically supported by the company at this time. Google has plans to implement fax services in the future, but has so far not done so.

Faxing is much less popular than it was before the proliferation of Internet services. Now, it is much more common to send an email or scanned photograph of a document or picture than a fax.

Nevertheless, faxing does still play a role in business and personal pursuits. Faxing is quick and simple, whereas emailing a scanned document or photo is a multistage process.

Moreover, many people would prefer to continue to use their existing hardware rather than buying a scanner. Luckily, there are steps you can take to send faxes via Google despite the fact that faxing is not supported.

First, you need to edit the options for the phone you have connected with your VoIP service account. Configure the advanced settings so that when this phone calls your Internet number, it goes straight to voice-mail.

Next, send your fax. Instead of inputting the number in the usual manner, however, input your Google Voice number, followed immediately by --2--, then the number of the fax receiving machine.

Setting up your VoIP account in this way should enable you to send faxes for free.
